Why should you
read it
J. M. DeMatteis’ run on The Spectacular Spider-Man takes Spider-Man to exhilarating new depths, exploring the psychological turmoil of Peter Parker and giving even his villains, like Vulture, a hauntingly relatable complexity. This era redefines what it means to be Spider-Man, with gripping, emotional storytelling that I consider the best after Straczynski's run on The Amazing Spider-Man, and it'll keep you on the edge of your seat.

Comments & Additional Info
It's amazing to think about how much J.M. DeMatteis grew as a writer from Kraven's Last Hunt to this era. Personally, I see it as a drastic change—in the best way possible. I believe that any Spider-Man fan should consider his run essential reading, simply because of how deeply he develops the characters. It doesn't matter if it's Spider-Man, the main villain Vermin, Harry Osborn, or even the nurse caring for Vermin—each character is explored with such depth that it feels like reading a novel, where you truly get to know them, their traumas, and their struggles. In other words, you feel the characters.
